Mauser 98 Berlin & Suhl Ernst Stiegleder Custom Pre-WWII 8x60mmJ Offers Welcome!
Description: This is a rare bird. It is a Mauser Model 98 customized by Ernst Stiegleder for the company Berlin und Suhl in the post-War Weimar Republic during the 1920s. It features engraving on a level similar to the Mauser Model B, a two-leaf rear sight, a half-round/half-octagonal barrel, claw mount bases for German style rings, twin triggers (main trigger and a set trigger), built in sling swivels, custom stock, and a custom bolt. Despite its age and use, this is a beautiful rifle. The listed price is 895.00 but we welcome offers. As mentioned in the title, this is chambered for the 8x60mmJ cartridge. The 8x60 came about because of a post-war law in Germany for civilians from owning rifles in the military 8x57mmJ (or S, more on those two letters later) chambering. To get around this law, many Mauser rifles were rechambered to the new 8x60, the cartridge itself being made simply by lengthening the original 8x57 case. Because of the longer case, and the strength of the Mauser 98 action, the 8x60 was loader hotter than its predecessor and in some loadings, was close to the 300 H&H in power. A word on the letters. The German army originally settled on a .318-inch diameter, round nose bullet for the 8x57 back in 1888 when the round was introduced. It was found soon after that the metallurgy of the time was not strong enough and the rifling in the barrels of the early Model 1888 rifles were wearing out quickly. As such, the rifling was deepened to a .323-inch diameter and the bullet changed to the now common spitzer type bullet. To differentiate the two rounds from each other, those cartridges with the .318-diameter bullet were marked at the time as 8x57I (“I” as in Ike) while the .323-diameter cartridges were marked 8x57S. The “I” stood for “Infantrie” or “Infantry”. Later on, a mistaking of the German letter “I” for the letter “J” led to the now common name of 8x57J for all rifles using the .318-diameter bullets. The letter S on the newer .323 rounds stood for Spitzgeschoß (spitz-ge-schoss) or spire point bullet – i.e. a spitzer round. Fast forward to the 1920s with the introduction of 8x60 and you the issue present. Some of the rechambered rifles were chambered for the original 8x57J and others the 8x57S. Rather than go to the trouble of building new barrels for each rifle, as with the 8x57, two versions of the 8x60 were created, the 8x60J and 8x60S. This rifle here uses the former round. Both cartridges can be loaded to the same level of performance in a 98-action due to its strength, but it is always recommended to use the correct diameter bullet for safety. The rifle here retains most of its bluing. The stock is dinged in a few places, but these can be steamed out easily. The only issue with the stock is small crack near the front of the forearm, which could also be repaired with little effort. The magazine floor plate appears to have some kind of micro-pitting present though it cannot be felt even with a bare fingertip. The bolt, strangely enough, has a serial number that does not matches the rifle’s (all the bolt parts do match each other) but it is a custom bolt built for the rifle. It appears that when new it was color case-hardened, which naturally, has worn away with time. The bolt handle itself has been customized with a flat bottom face and engraving. The grip cap is missing a small portion which is not surprising as there are creatures that will eat caps and stock plates that are made of rhino horn. The screw between the triggers can be adjusted to increase or decrease the set trigger sear adjustment. Currently, the screw has been adjusted so that the rear trigger does not need to be pulled in order for the gun to be fired. Normally, to fire a two-trigger rifle like this, you would pull the rear trigger to set the front trigger, and then pull the front to fire the gun. The rifle is engraved on its receiver, magazine floor plate, barrel, bolt handle, trigger guard, and on every screw, including the butt plate screws! The bore of the rifle is in fantastic condition though some copper fowling is present. There is no rust or pitting. This rifle would make a wonderful shooter even without a scope.
