Description: WORLD WAR I Dated ERFURT Arsenal 8mm MAUSER Kar98 GERMAN C&R Military Rifle GREAT WAR WWI Here we present a C&R Erfurt Kar98a Rifle, manufactured in 1918 at the Erfurt Arsenal in Erfurt, Germany. The original Kar98 was adopted in June of 1902 and was produced starting in 1903. With the adoption of the new 8mm “S” cartridge in 1903 all of these Carbines were modified for the new round. The heavy recoil and foot long muzzle flash from these modified carbines with the new cartridge lead to the suspension of production in 1905. To fix this problem the GPK (Gewehr Prufungs Kommission) developed the Kar98a, as is this example, with a longer barrel, which was 23.62 inches as compared to the original 17.7 inch barrel, and a different stock. This was the Carbine they accepted into service in January 1908. All Kar98a rifles were produced at Government arsenals, which were located in Amberg, Danzig, Erfurt, and Spandau. According to John Walter’s, “The German Rifle”, the total estimated production figure for the Kar 98a from all German government arsenals was over 1.5 million Carbines. These German military carbines were developed for non-infantry formations, which needed to protect themselves in combat environments. In the German Army of the early 20th century the units armed with carbines included: Artillery, bicycle, cavalry, engineer, machine gun, military police, motor transport, supply, and telephone and telegraph units. The overall condition is good. A mixed patina throughout. Sling slot was removed from the barrel band and the fore end cap have been rounded off. Stock has been shortened at the fore end and is solid throughout. Robust action. Numbers match. The bore is bright and reflective with sharp rifling. Own the original!
