"This Maynard Model 1873 Improved Hunting Rifle No. 9 appears to be in 35-30 Maynard caliber. As a Model 1873 it would take the thick base cartridege. The 26"" 35 caliber barrel has an excellent bore with strong rifling. The barrel has approx. 95% blue which is starting to turn brown on the bottom. It has a post type front sight and a fixed notch rear sight. The frame has generous amounts of case coloring visible mixed with blue. The lever has traces of case turning to silver. The lower tang which is dated 1865 and has the serial number 17033 is a smooth gray patina. The upper tang is fitted with a Maynard peep sight. The receiver has the 1873 date and standard Maynard markings. The stock is fine with minor wear and no cracks or chips. The buttplate is a smooth gray-brown. The action functions correctly. This much better than average Maynard Model 1873 Improved Hunting Rifle No. 9 is fit for the finest collection.
