Antique MASS. ARMS Single Shot MAYNARD Breech Loading PERCUSSION SHOTGUN
CIVIL WAR “1865” Dated 20 Gauge SCATTERGUN
Description: Antique MASS. ARMS Single Shot MAYNARD Breech Loading PERCUSSION SHOTGUN CIVIL WAR “1865” Dated 20 Gauge SCATTERGUN Here we present an antique Massachusetts Arms Company Single Shot Maynard Patent 20 Gauge Shotgun, made by Massachusetts Arms Co. of Chicopee Falls, Mass. This gun was available in two barrel sets, including a rifled barrel and a 20 gauge smoothbore with easy exchange. The Maynard hunting/target rifle and shotgun were developed by Edward Maynard. Maynard, a New Jersey dentist, lent his talents to developing a new primer system for guns which allowed for faster reloading of flintlock muskets. The system was intended to make up for the poor results for this style of muskets. The Maynard Carbine would go on to be a primary weapon during the American Civil War. This style rifle was one of the first rifles to use quickly interchangeable barrels of various calibers. Though many considered this rifle “ugly”, it was quite popular being both accurate and dependable. Maynard received his first patent in 1845 with the priming system which cycled a small mercury fulminate charge to a percussion cap. This invention turned out to be successful, and the United States Federal Government offered a dollar per weapon to produce them using his method. By 1855 all 1855 model .58 caliber military rifles and carbines were using Maynard's method. In 1851 Maynard patented a breech-loading rifle. The Confederacy during the Civil War took to this method particularly because it did not require the major manufacturing equipment used for most gun production. Maynard founded the Maynard Arms Company in 1857, contracting the Massachusetts Arms Company to manufacture the Maynard Carbines. The Maynard was one of the few patent breech-loaders to survive the Civil War. It continued to be produced for hunting and target shooting until the mid-1890s. The overall condition is nearing fine. Much of the original finish remains with some maturing to a light gray patina. The stock shows some handling wear and remains solid. Mirror bright bore. Legible markings. Strong action. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 26 inches. Caliber: 20 Gauge Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
