Description: CASED MULTI-BARREL-CARTRIDGE SET Massachusetts Arms MAYNARD Rifle Antique .35-30 & .50-50 with Brass & Original Bullet Molds Here we present an antique Cased Multi-Barrel Maynard Breechloading Rifle Set, made by the Massachusetts Arms Co. in Chicopee, Massachusetts. This example was originally manufactured as a First Model percussion carbine. The First Model carbines appeared from 1858 to 1859 and were identified by the patchbox located in the stock, as well as the use of Dr. Maynard’s tape primer system. Production totaled only 5,000 guns and notable recipients included the 9th Pennsylvania and the 1st Wisconsin infantry regiments. In the post-war period Massachusetts Arms set about offering their popular breechloader to the public, coming out with new cartridges of various sizes for hunting purposes. Some of these were sold with a single barrel in a single chambering, though there were sets like this one sold in various rifle and shotgun chamberings, meaning someone would have one gun to fulfill multiple roles. Included in this fitted case are two extra barrels, one 26” long in .50 caliber, and one 20” long in .35 caliber. There are two Massachusetts Arms bullets molds: one in .50 and the other in .35 caliber. Each has multiple brass reloadable casings that look new. There is a period powder flask and a modern loading tool that looks like it was made by a handy machinist. The overall condition is very good. The action is excellent. The bores are in very good condition with sharp rifling. The stock has nice grain structure and remains solid despite obvious use. Not all of the barrels match serial number-wise. Own the original!
