Maynard Second Model Carbine

Description:
Maynard Second Model breechloader single shot percussion carbine. 20" round barrel with octagon breech. 50 cal. Marks on frame right side, MANUFACTURED BY / MASS. ARMS CO. / CHICOPEE FALLS, left side EDWARD MAYNARD. / PATENTEE. / MAY 27, 1851. / DEC 6, 1859. Serial number 10987 appears on trigger guard tang. Riding ring and bar on left side (missing), single leaf sight, bore rifled with six grooves.

Maynard produced about 20,000 carbines referred in company literature as Model 1863. The Second Model featured a percussion system delivering center fire through the base of a metal cartridge. The hinged barrel tips downward to load by lowering the trigger guard and pushing it forward. Manufactured by Massachusetts Arms Co., Chicopee Falls Massachusetts.

The condition of this rifle is poor. The loading lever is missing its end piece, the riding ring and bar is missing, numerous screws have been manipulated, replaced or are missing, and the buttstock is fashioned from two different stocks that have been joined together with glue. The buttplate is from another gun of the period and has been made to fit this rifle. The rifling in the bore is visible but faint. The bore is pitted and has rust throughout.  The barrel has two dovetails cut into the left side, the purpose of which is unknown.

The rifle has been decorated with numerous brass tacks on both sides of the buttstock. Carved into the left side of the stock are the letters XXXXIIVIII. It is unknown whether these adornments were added during the period of use or at a later date. It was common for Native Americans to adorn their rifles with tacks.

Manufactured Circa 1869-1865. Included with the rifle is an animal hide scabbard with Native painted designs.
