Rare First Model Maynard percussion carbine
Description:
A Rare First Model Maynard percussion carbine, manufactured by Massachusetts Arms Co., Chicopee Falls, and marked Maynard Arms Co., Washington. Serial number 5959 This is a desirable early Maynard breechloading percussion carbine with the key First Model features collectors look for, including the tang rear sight, buttstock patchbox, part-octagon / part-round barrel, and distinctive Maynard underlever breechloading action.
The 1st Model Maynard is an important early American breechloading design and is strongly associated with Civil War-era firearms development. These early carbines are much less commonly encountered than many later Civil War carbines, and examples retaining the proper early features are desirable to antique arms and U.S. martial collectors.
Metal surfaces show an honest aged gray/brown patina with finish loss, scattered oxidation, and handling wear consistent with age. The wood stock shows dings, dents, scratches, and finish wear from long-term use and storage, but retains a solid antique appearance. Overall, the carbine has the untouched character many collectors prefer over refinished examples.
The firearm is being sold as an antique collectible. Any buyer intending to fire it should have it inspected by a qualified gunsmith before use.
