Merkel .470 NE Model 140 Safari

Description:
Merkel .470 3 1/4" NE Model 140 Safari Game Scene Engraved Double Rifle.
No. A470061

Based on a scroll back, bolstered Anson & Deeley boxlock action w/ a Greener style cross bolt third fastener, clipped fences, pin cocking indicators, disk set strikers, two triggers, manual safety, and intercepting sears.

The coin finish receiver is game scene engraved featuring a bull elephant on the left side and a lion on the right side. Each game scene is surrounded by arabesque scroll engraving that flows onto the bottom of the action and around the Suhl gunmaker and anvil; Merkel's hallmark.

The 24" Krupp steel, chopper lump barrels have a full length machine matted rib w/ a raised quarter rib and a raised ramp front sight featuring 1 standing/1 folding rear Express sight and Brass foresight. The forward sling attachment is mountyed to the bottom of the barrels and there is some simple border engraving at the breeches.

The walnut stock has a Right Hand cheekpiece, a somewhat open grip design w/ a solid polymer grip cap, and a 14 3/8" LOP over a factory "London" red recoil pad. The splinter forend has a Deeley type forend latch w/ Extractors only. Point pattern chekering w/ Mullered borders on the grip and forend.

The rifle weighs 10 lbs. 13 oz. and is light enough to carry on long marches, yet heavy enough to manage the recoil. I always find these Merkel double rifles easy to shoot.

Based on the time proven A&D action w/ the Greener cross bolt and the clipped fences, this is a very robust design. This is also one of the earlier versions of this rifle that, in my opinion, represents very good value w/ all the extra features normally found on much more expensive Best Quality double rifles.

I have test fired the rifle w/ factory Hornady 500gr DGS (solid) at 50 yards off of shooting sticks w/ very acceptable accuracy. The rifle would no doubt accomplish tighter groups in the hands of a better shot than myself.

Rifle is in a Maker's lightweight leather flat case by Emmebi of Italy w/ Maker's trade label.

While the rifle has been hunted, it remains in excellent overall condition w/ only superficial handling marks that are only noticeable when you look for them. Metal remains excellent w/ a slight, pleasing patina to the edge of the receiver around the guard bow. The barrels and bore remain excellent.

Dangerous Game Scene season is upon us and this rifle is available for immediate delivery and ready to hunt!
