The SVT-40 (Samozaryadnaya Vintovka Tokareva, Obrazets 1940 goda) is a Soviet semi-automatic battle rifle that served as a major, albeit secondary, infantry weapon during World War II. Designed by Fedor Tokarev, it was intended to replace the aging bolt-action Mosin-Nagant, but production was curtailed by the German invasion, leading to a return to the older, more reliable bolt-action design.
