Underwood M1 Carbine, World War II Production – Manufactured in 1943
Description: This Underwood-Elliott-Fisher M1 carbine was manufactured in 1943. It has a Type-2 receiver. It also has a Type-2 rear sight, indicating that the rifle was refurbished by the military and the Type-1 rear sight was replaced. The top of the barrel, just behind the front sight, is stamped, “UNDER WOOD”. The R is not visible and there is a space between UNDER and WOOD, even though it is one word. The faintness of the stamps is probably due to refurbishing. Below the UNDERWOOD stamp is what appears to be a “1” followed by a large space and “43”. I believe this is January 1943, the month and year of production, which is consistent with serial-number dating. This stamp is also faint and hard to read. Below that is the U.S. Army ordinance symbol – a flaming bomb. About an inch below the bomb is a “P”. On the left side of the barrel, also just behind the front sight, is stamped “EXEL/GARDNER, M.A. This the post-war importer stamp. Though the rifle was manufactured in the U.S. sometime after WWII, U.S. military guns had to be imported back into the U.S. The serial number of the rifle is stamped on the receiver just behind the rear sight. Below that is stamped a single “B”. Just forward of the serial number and under the rear sight is stamped, “UNDERWOOD” (not lined through). On the top of the receiver, just before the barrel, is stamped “U.S. CARBINE” (first line) and “CAL. .30” (second line). On the right side of the barrel/forend band is stamped “AI”. The only stamp on the wood is a single “U” stamped on the left side of the stock near the comb. The overall condition of this gun is 90+ percent. The metal (receiver, operating handle, bolt, magazine floor, bayonet stud, barrel, sights, trigger, and trigger guard) is mid to high 90 percent, with no rust and very few mars. The wood is 90+ percent with very few dents or mars. Looking at the right side of the rifle, the color of the handguard seems to be different (more yellowish) than the forend of the stock, which may lead one to think the handguard might not be original. However, looking at the left side of side of the rifle, the handguard and the forend of the stock are comparable in color and grain. Keep in mind that the parts of most U.S. wartime guns were massed produced and assembled without regard to matching anything. So, you would expect to see differences in wood grain and finishes. I cannot guarantee the wood on this gun is all original, but I cannot not refute it, either. I believe it is. The rifle comes with two 15-round magazines, one packaged sling and oiler, and one “M1 Carbine Owner’s Manual” (1984 production by Desert Publications). I also have one box of Wolf ammo (50 rounds), one partial box of American Eagle ammo (38 rounds), one partial box of UMC ammo (35 rounds), and one box UMC ammo (50 rounds). I will include this ammo with the price of the gun, but, if you want it, shipping will be an extra $15, as I have to ship them separately via UPS. The photos are high resolution, so zoom to see details. Contact me for additional photos of any area you would like to see or see better. The buyer pays $30 for USPS Priority mail, $20.90 for insurance, and $15 for shipping the ammunition, if desired. Virginia buyers must pay 5.3% sales tax. The fastest way to get this gun is to pay with USPS (U.S. Postal Service) money orders, as they are like cash. I will ship the rifle immediately upon receipt of a USPS money order and an FFL. I will also accept a personal check and other type money orders, as well as bank checks and cashier's checks, but I will hold the rifle until it clears my bank; this includes bank checks and cashier’s checks. I do not accept credit cards, debit cards, or PayPal. Check or money order must be made out to Jerry Pownall, NOT Barboursville Arms. If you wish to contact me, please "Email Seller". I will answer your questions, explain the purchase / transfer process, and provide my mailing address. I am available any time, except Friday evenings and Saturdays. I will return emails Saturday evening. SOLD |
