"Scarce U.S. Special Contract Model 1861 by L.G.&Y .58 caliber 5th U.S.C.T. (AL8102)

NSN, made in 1863, .58 caliber, 40"" in armory bright finish with scattered pin-prick oxidation. Lock plate is marked US/L.G-&Y/Windsor VT and dated 1864. Stock shows dings, nicks and minor scratches, a small avulsion is visible rear of the lock plate. Butt-plate is marked ""US/98 Co. I 5th U.S.C.T., The 5th U.S.C.T. was formed out of Ohio in 1863 and was composed of freed-men. Most noticeable battles of the 5th were Petersburg (Battle of the Crater) and the battles at Fort Fisher.
