This flintlock Indisan Trade Musket is unusual as the barrel was never shortened during its period of use. As the quality of black powder improved most muskets of this type were shortened to make them lighte and handier. The overall length of this musket is appprox. 67.5"". The approx. 51 3/8"" octagon to round 64 caliber smooth bore barrel has a fair bore. The barrel has two Birmingham proof marks with 22 for the bore size between them. All the metal has an even gray-brown patina. The lock is marked with a castle over an elephant at the center and WARRANTED at the tail. This musket features the deep fur trade style trigger guard. The side plate is solid and undecorated. There are six iron pipes retaining the ramrod. The full length dark-finished stock is fine with sharp edges, teardrops on the sides ant top to the rear of the action, an old India ink inventory mark (easily removed), 50-86, forward of the trigger guard, and no cracks or chips. The buttstock is very narrow and light and with a narrow butt plate. The butt plate has a brass oval inventory disc, 50 86, attached below the butt plate screw. This is easily removed if desired. The action functions correctly but the trigger pull is very heavy. The Indian Fur Trade type muskets are rarely seen, specially in full lenght like this one. If this gun could only talk.
