Dutch 1871-88 Beaumont Vitali Rifle - 11x52mmR
Description: Used. The Dutch Beaumont rifle underwent a few changes before it became the Dutch Beaumont Vitali rifle. In 1871 it was adopted by the Dutch military as a single shot breech loader. This was in keeping with the trend at the time of a large caliber black powder cartridge single shot firearm. Soon magazine fed repeating rifles were becoming the standard in the 1880's. The Dutch turned to the Italian designed Vitali magazine conversion to update their 1871 single shots. In 1888 conversions began by attaching the new fixed 4 shot magazine. The safety lever on the right side was also removed during a seperate conversion process (Circa 1876-77) and a magazine cut-off switch installed on the left side of the receiver. (Beginning 1888) The sights were also updated due to the adoption of a heavier projectile loaded into the 11x52R cartridge in 1878. Other changes included a sliding ejector added to the left side of the bolt and two vent holes were drilled into the top of the receiver to vent gas away from the shooter in the event of a case rupture. This rifle was a standard Dutch army issue infantry rifle. Colonial rifles and naval rifles never had the Vitali conversion done. This rifle was never blued but finished in the white. The only Beaumonts to be blued were the Colonial type as protection against humidity in the Dutch East Indies. All in all this is a solid example of a 1871-88 Beaumont Vitali rifle that would make an excellent shooter. SOLD Manufacturer: 1877 Caliber Info: 11x52mmR Metal Condition: Very Good to Good.
