Exceptional British Pattern 1769 Short Land Brown Bess Musket
Description: NSN, .75 Caliber, 41 3/4" barrel with a very good, lightly pitted bore. This is a very handsome musket, still in original flint, with a "TOWER" marked, "(Crown) / GR" cypher lockplate with "FG" maker mark on the interior (Farmer & Galton). The barrel has a mixed gray and plum-brown patina with faint cleaning marks along its length, and some vise marks on either side of the breech. Crisp, deeply struck proofmarks are present as well. The 1755 Pattern lock is correct and has a matching gray and plum-brown patina. The lock itself functions well and catches firmly at both half and full-cock. The pin-fastened stock is in very good shape, with minor handling marks and small surface blemishes scattered throughout, as well as some minor impact marks around a few of the pins, and around the brass sideplate. The brass furniture has an overall pale yellow-ochre patina with scattered scratches and marks, most noticeably on the wrist escutcheon and on the trigger guard bow. The metal ramrod is a replacement. This is a splendid example of a Revolutionary War era Short Land Pattern Brown Bess, in fine condition, and would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
