US 1808 Contract Flintlock Musket with "Eagle / US" Marked Lock
Description:
NSN, .71 Caliber, 44 1/4" barrel with a good, lightly pitted bore. This is an interesting musket that conforms to the 1808 Contract pattern and is marked with a "P / RC" proofed barrel, and a lockplate marked simply with "(Eagle) / US (in oval)" ahead of the cock. The metal has an overall dark brown patina with some scattered minor handling marks and some thin ruddy surface oxidation around the breech of the barrel, most noticeably within the pan. The walnut stock has numerous handling marks and blemishes within the thick added oil finish, along with a diagonal crack running up from the rear tip of the lockplate, and a large chip missing from the left edge of the forend just behind the nosecap. The musket comes with an original iron ramrod, and the lock catches at both half and full-cock, however the sear is worn and depressing the trigger will release the cock from either notch. This is a historically significant War of 1812 era US musket, and is in good-near very good condition overall. Antique;
