1942-43 mfg. WORLD WAR II Era U.S. WINCHESTER M1 Carbine Light Rifle WWII
Compact, Lightweight Defensive SUPPORT TROOP Rifle
Description: 1942-43 mfg. WORLD WAR II Era U.S. WINCHESTER M1 Carbine Light Rifle WWII Compact, Lightweight Defensive SUPPORT TROOP Rifle Here we present a C&R Winchester U.S. M1 Carbine Semi-Automatic Rifle, manufactured circa 1942-43 by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company of New Haven, Connecticut. This .30 caliber semi-automatic rifle was first used by the United States Armed Forces on October 22, 1941. Of the 6,110,730 carbines made of all types built during the war, Winchester manufactured 828,059, or 13.5% of the total between 1942 and 1944. Despite having similar name and appearance, the M1 Carbine is not a carbine version of the M1 Garand rifle. They are different firearms and use different ammunition. Before World War II, soldiers and support troops found the full-sized M1 Garand too heavy and awkward to carry comfortably. It often snagged on brush or slipped off their shoulders, making it hard to move quickly. Witnessing Germany’s use of paratroopers and glider-borne troops behind enemy lines, the Army realized they needed a smaller, lighter weapon—one that offered better range and firepower than a pistol but weighed no more than five pounds. This led to the development of a compact carbine, including a folding-stock version for paratroopers, to meet these urgent needs. This example was manufactured as part of the first production block from Winchester between October 1942 to December 1943 in the 1000000-1349999 serial number range. The overall condition is good. Bright shiny bore with sharp rifling. Strong action. Gray patina on the metal surfaces. The stock shows considerable handling wear, is refinished. Legible markings. No magazine is included.
