This Springfield Armory M1D Garand is built around an exceptionally early five-digit receiver, serial number 24970, placing the core of this rifle in Springfield Armory’s earliest M1 production era. That alone gives it collector gravity, but the rifle goes further with its M1D sniper configuration, barrel-mounted scope block, and relieved handguard profile. This is not a common rack-grade Garand dressed up for attention — this is a hard-serving M1D-pattern rifle with the kind of early receiver and rebuild history that serious Garand collectors stop and study.

The Springfield Armory barrel is dated 1-52, identifying it as a post-war replacement barrel consistent with the rebuild and sniper-conversion era. The attached armorer tag records a muzzle reading of 3+, and the rifle retains the rugged long-stroke gas piston system, semi-automatic action, post-war T105-style rear sight, and M1D barrel-block system. The M1D setup was built for practicality: a sniper-capable Garand using a barrel-mounted optic system that simplified standardization and maintenance compared to earlier receiver-mounted sniper conversions.

The rifle shows a Springfield bolt marked D28287-12SA, S-11, visible arsenal rebuild character, parkerized metal, and a heavily service-worn U.S.G.I. walnut stock with a circled P proof. The stock also bears a small boxed foreign-service stamp that strongly supports a Greek-return style story. Greek-return Garands are prized because they represent rifles that left U.S. service, continued serving through allied Cold War military channels, and eventually came back with distinctive wear, depot handling, and secondary inventory markings. This stock mark, combined with the rifle’s rebuild traits and honest field-used appearance, gives this M1D the kind of international service character collectors love — the look of a rifle that kept working long after its original American chapter closed.

The M1D was the final major sniper evolution of John C. Garand’s legendary rifle. Adopted after World War II and carried into the Korean War and Cold War period, the M1D used a barrel-mounted scope system that made it easier to produce and service than the earlier M1C. The base M1 rifle had already earned immortality in World War II, where its semi-automatic firepower gave American infantry a decisive advantage over bolt-action-equipped opponents and inspired General George S. Patton’s famous praise for the Garand as the greatest battle implement ever devised.

This rifle delivers a powerful collector profile: early Springfield five-digit receiver, M1D sniper configuration, Springfield 1950 barrel, arsenal rebuild features, U.S.G.I. walnut stock, circled proof, and a Greek-return style foreign-service stock mark. It has the scars, the configuration, and the story collectors chase — not polished safe-queen fantasy, but real martial character with real presence.
