1949 Vintage French Military MAS-36 Rifle in .308 Winchester w/ Original Military Sling & Bayonet
** Nice Century Arms Import **
Description: This is a very nice example of the main rifle of the French Army in World War 2, the MAS 36 rifle made by the French State Arsenal. This particular rifle is a Century import that was converted to fire the .308 Winchester/7.62 Nato round which is much cheaper and easier to find than the 7.5 French round it was originally chambered in. The MAS 36 rifle is a short carbine length weapon that was designed by France using the lessons they learned in WW1. The MAS 36 uses a bolt with rear locking lugs like the Enfield for ease of cleaning and reliability, and a dogleg shaped bolt handle bent forward in an ergonomic position for fast action. The internal box magazine holds 5 round and can loaded by 5-round stripper clips thru the top of the receiver. The sights on the MAS 36 are composed of an adjustable sliding rear peep sight with settings from 200 meters to 1200 meters, and a hooded front blade sight. Both sights were made robust and well-protected. The stock assembly is composed of three parts, the buttstock, forearm, and handguard. This made repairing or replacing damaged stock parts much easier and less costly than a one piece stock. The front of the MAS 36 has a stacking rod mounted on the right side and a housing for the cruciform spike bayonet, which is stored upside down in the rifle. When the bayonet is needed it can be released with a push-button and flipped around and locked in. The MAS 36 was an excellent weapon overall, and served the French Military well thru the 1960's in varying degrees. It is considered one of the finest French bolt action military rifles ever fielded by the French Military. This particular example would be the perfect rifle for someone wanting a nice representative example of this weapon. It is not matching but has a nice uniform appearance and is attractive overall. As you can see from the pictures, the only unattractive part of the rifle is the small gap created where the stock was shortened to match the set-back barrel when it was rechambered for .308 Winchester. The metal all has a nice phosphate finish that is intact and in excellent condition. The bore is in good shape overall with nice strong rifling and only some minor frosting in the grooves. This MAS 36 should be an excellent shooter. The original stock set looks great and all three of the parts are a close match. All of the controls on this MAS are in perfect working order and the action locks up tight with no slop. This MAS 36 comes with an original French Military leather sling in excellent condition, complete with the original maker's ink stamp intact. If you have been looking for a good "shooter" MAS 36, this 1949 vintage rifle would be an excellent choice.
