Guns Listing ID: 372946 The MLE 1890, or Berthier carbine, is a French carbine that was developed for mounted cavalry troops, having a shorter barrel and a bent bolt handle. A Carbine version of the 1886 Lebel was not a feasible option, as the Lebel needed the full-length for the tube feed magazine. The distinguishing features were the chambering for the smokeless 8mm Lebel, the short barrel (in fact it was shorter than the Gras carbine), and the fact that it fed from 3 round Mannlicher-style enbloc clips, increasing the speed of reloading.
