Unit Marked Mauser Model 1871 Carbine by Steyr
Description: Serial #4086D, 11mm Mauser, 20” barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some minor freckling within the grooves. This is a Steyr-made, 1876 dated carbine (with 1877 surcharge) that has had the stock neatly shortened to the middle band, presumably for sporting purposes. The barrel has an overall smooth plum-brown patina with some mild fading and a bit of silvering at the muzzle. There is some mild pitting along the surface of the faceted breech, but it is very evenly spread and is only detectable via a slight “fuzziness” to the proof marks. The receiver has been cleaned to armory bright and the matching numbered bolt has a darker plum patina forming on the handle. The bolt stop exhibits some minor surface damage and the screw head has further damage within the slot. The walnut stock has an old coat of varnish added over numerous small handling marks and minor blemishes. The buttplate has a legible unit marking on the tang: “7D/2/118” (7th Dragoon Regt., Co. 2, Gun 118). This is a very nice little, shootable “Karabiner” that could be restored without too much difficulty and rates very good plus condition overall.
