Massachusetts 1812 Percussion Converted Long Fowler

Description:
About 16 bore, 44” barrel with an oxidized bore. The barrel is an overall dull gunmetal gray with a coating of light plum brown and some older tan lacquer, beneath-which is scattered light oxidation and a few spots of pinprick pitting. There are the remnants of a simple brass blade front sight and “N. Pratt” is script engraved atop the barrel. Converted by drum and nipple methods, the lockplate and hammer are a dull pewter gunmetal gray patina, hammer, nipple barrel and the surrounding metal showing light pitting. There is an oak under rib with brass ramrod thimbles, simple brass tailpipe and a simple brass triggerguard with a pineapple finial front extension. The sideplate is very lightly borderline engraved and is simple in construction with a brass buttplate showing a lightly chiseled tang. The stock appears to be cherry and rates about very good as cleaned many years ago, now with the edges soft, showing multiple minor cracks along the barrel channel and to some very light silver wire inlay around the tang and oval German silver monogram plate atop the wrist. The lock is loosely mechanically functional and what is likely the original or at least an antique ramrod is present. Overall length for this over-the-mantel fowler is 59 1/2”. Nathaniel Pratt was active in Watertown Massachusetts circa 1812. Where the states largest armory was located , other than the Springfield Armory, which was federal.
