Australian Snider Enfield Mk.2** Naval Rifle (Tasmanian Purchase)
Description: Serial #3084, .577 Snider, 30 1/2" barrel with a very good, five-groove bore that has light freckling within the grooves, and mild pitting near the muzzle. This rifle has an 1863 dated, Enfield lock while the breechblock has a crisp “(Broad Arrow) / WD / (crown)/ E / 34" view mark. The barrel has 70-75% of the original blue finish with silvering at the muzzle as well as streaks of plum-brown patina along its length. The lock and breech assembly have a darkly mottled gray patina throughout with a dark yellow-ochre patina on the brass trigger guard, nose cap, and lock screw bolsters. The rear sight is very close to the breech due to the Snider breech requiring 3" of the barrel to be removed. The action itself is tight and fully functional while the stock, which has been lightly sanded throughout, has a fine added oil finish with small handling marks and minor blemishes throughout and still legible markings on the butt. The buttplate is property stamped on the tang: “TG / 138" (Tasmania Government / Rifle #138). The ramrod is a modern replacement, but an original leather sling is included, and is in fine shape with minor crazing and some traces of light flaking. The government of Tasmania purchased 210 Snider Naval Rifles in 1878, and this example is one of only a handful of examples known today. This is a very good-near fine example of a very rare Tasmanian marked Snider Two-Band Rifle, and would make a fantastic addition to any collection.
