British Martini-Henry Mk. II Carbine (Scottish Unit Marked)
Description: Serial #7144 J, .577/.450 Martini-Henry, 21 1/2 inch barrel with a very good, lightly freckled bore. This is an Enfield-made, 1885 dated carbine that has double arrow deaccession stamps and an overall freckled, plum-brown patina that has areas of mild pinprick pitting scattered about the surface. Additionally, there are a series of shallow peen marks on the rear of the frame next to the thumbprint. The walnut forend and buttstock have numerous small handling marks and surface blemishes scattered throughout the armory reapplied varnish. The stock has clear and well-defined double arrow stamps, crisp Enfield roundel on the right side, and the stock disk has a crisp Scottish unit marking: “1.V.FF.A / 615" (1st Volunteer Forfarshire Artillery / gun #615. 3rd Co., based in Dundee). The carbine is outfitted with sling swivels, and an incorrect iron ramrod is present. This is a very nice example of a desirable, late model Martini-Henry that would make a great addition to any collection of British military small arms.
