Extremely Nice Harpers Ferry Hall Rifle U.S. Model 1819
Description: NSN, .52 Caliber, 32 5/8” barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a splendid 2nd Type, 1838 dated rifle that retains 75-80% of the original brown lacquered finish that has flaked to the underlying plum-brown metal on the balance. There are some further specks of mild freckling scattered here and there around the metal, but these are negligible. The tilting breech-block does not appear to have been fired very much, if at all, and has no pitting around the touch-hole while the block face and chamber are likewise in excellent condition, and the crisp rifling is correctly back-bored at the muzzle. The walnut stock is in excellent original condition with only minor handling marks and blemishes marring the original military oil finish. The edges are still crisp and sharp, and there are no cracks or major blemishes in the wood. The ramrod is original and matches the condition of the rifle. This is a splendid original example of a one of the most innovative infantry arms made during the flintlock era. While never the great success it's proponents hoped it would be, the Hall design spurred on developments that ultimately led to the uniform manufacture of weapons with interchangeable parts.
