The Remington Rolling Block action—a single?shot breech?loading design by Joseph Rider for Remington—was adopted in various contracts after the U.S. Civil War. The “Model 1870” designation is somewhat informal (Remington often simply used “Rolling Block” with the patent dates) but generally refers to the large-frame .50-70 Government calibre rifles produced in the early 1870s for military or militia use.
Key design features

• Large frame “#1” action (versus smaller export variants).

Its connection to the New York State Militia (NYSM):
In the early 1870s, New York made a significant purchase of Remington rolling blocks. According to comparative historical sources:
An initial order of approximately 15,000 rifles (with bayonets) to arm the New York militia. A follow?up acquisition of about 4,500 rifles and 1,500 saddle-ring carbines in 1873. The total number often cited: “19,450 rifles in two orders” for New York. The state of New York chose these rifles rather than waiting for the U.S. Army standard.
The NYSM wanted a modern breech?loading rifle to replace muzzle-loaders or conversions; the Rolling Block offered a robust, simple action. Because the U.S. Army adopted other systems (e.g., the trapdoor Springfield) the state militia could pick a different path.
The NY contract examples were chambered in .50-70 Government. They typically had three barrel bands and a 36″ barrel length (for the rifle version) in contrast to some other contract variants. Hammer and breechblock lever modifications
The NY contract rifles feature an unusually high hammer spur (very tall hammer) and a large, horizontally-projecting breechblock lever (spur) on the right side. Both the hammer spur and the breechblock lever have “shield?shaped checkering” (as opposed to simple cross-hatch checkering on most standard models). Safety mechanism (half-cock/locking bolt).
 

Receiver markings and cartouches

• Receiver tang markings: For NY contract rifles the patent dates often include “Nov. 7th 1871” etc. Proxibid
• Stock cartouches: Many NYSM rifles have stock markings such as “RPB” (inspector cartouche), “HSH” (state inspector initials), and “SNY” (State of New York) on right wrist of the buttstock.

Service life and standardization

• The NYSM retained the .50-70 Rolling Block as standard arm until the late 1890s, even though the U.S. Army had moved on to other calibres and rifling systems. The NY contract rifles are identifiable by their unique features (hammer spur, breechblock lever, safety mechanism, cartouches).
• Because the NYSM contract is comparatively large (15,000+ rifles) and because many remained in state inventory (peace?time service), they tend to appear in better original condition than some foreign or export contract Rolling Blocks…and many such as this specimen were reblued and continued to be used for militia purposes in the state. This specimen still has sharp markings and PERFECT cartouches. The bore is excellent as well.
