JD Mowry Marked US Model 1861 Civil War Rifle Musket by Norwich
Description: .JD Mowry Marked US Model 1861 Civil War Rifle Musket by Norwich.....LAYAWAY? .58 caliber. 40" round barrel secured by three flat, spring-retained bands. SN: NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, walnut stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifle musket. Lock marked with a {Spread-Winged Eagle} forward of the hammer and in two horizontal lines, U.S. / C.D. NORWICH  with the date 1863 at the tail. Top of breech with matching 1862 date and left angled flat with typical V / P / {Eagle Head} proof marks. Counterpane with oval JD MOWRY / NORWICH / CONN cartouche and two script inspection cartouches, a JM for James Mills and an AJN for Augustus J Noble, both arsenal sub-inspectors. US on buttplate tang, U marks on barrel bands. Retains original US 1861 pattern 3-leaf rear sight, correct for later 1861 contact rifle muskets, as well as the musket style front sight/bayonet lug combination. Retains both sling swivels and a correct tulip head, swelled shank ramrod that is full-length with good threads at the end. Like so many of the contractors to produced Model 1861 Rifle Muskets during the Civil War, the story of John D Mowry is somewhat convoluted and confusing. The firm received a total of three contracts for Model 1861s, totaling 42,000 guns and in the end delivered roughly half that amount, a total of 22,000 with 11,000 each being delivered in 1863 and 1864. During one of the many reorganizations that affected Mowry and his interrelated companies, it has been noted that he delivered a total of 2,000 guns, 1,000 each in December of 1863 and January of 1864 that had Norwich marked locks and the Mowry mark in a cartouche on the stock. This is one of those scarce Mowry cartouche marked guns and a gun missing from many advanced collections of Civil War arms. CONDITION: Very fine. Metal lightly cleaned in the past with a dull pewter patina and scattered surface oxidation and minor discoloration. Markings remain clear and fully legible. Mechanically functional, Nicebore with strong rifling and scattered oxidation and light pitting. Stock with some light wear and minor rounding to some of the sharp edges, with clear cartouches. Showing scattered light bumps, dings and mars. S/H $55...2nd firearm ships FREE, with this one. Thanks.....Greg 422-426 Price: $2,399.00 Buy Now Antique: Yes Contact Seller |
