Lower Canada Enfield P.1856 Artillery Carbine w/ Bayonet
Description: NSN, .577 Caliber, 24" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some freckling and mild pitting at the muzzle. This is a very rare, Lower Canada marked carbine that uses one of the Liege contracted, “E / LG" proofed barrels; one of about 100 such carbines, and one of only 76 Foot Artillery marked carbines. The metal has an overall plum-brown patina, flecked with gray along the high points and edges, and there are further streaks of gray along the 1856 dated, “TOWER" marked lockplate. The stock is English walnut with “P. WOODWARD & SON" stamp along the belly of the butt, “W. BLYTH" opposite the lock, and large “(Double Broad Arrow) WD" War Department stamp on the right side. The brass furniture has an overall dark ochre patina with small hole drilled through the edge of the trigger guard, and unit issue markings on the buttplate tang: “LC / D / 2" (Quebec 2nd Foot Artillery). The wood has numerous handling marks and blemishes throughout, along with some tiny chips missing from the ramrod channel (an original ramrod is included), and the barrel bands match the rest of the metal. The carbine is accompanied by an unmarked saber bayonet with 22 1/2" yataghan blade and scattered light freckling throughout, heaviest on the hilt fittings, which also have a dark plum-brown patina. The crossguard, and the checkered grip scales are in very good-fine condition. The bayonet comes with a correct, heavily flaked steel and leather scabbard, and black leather frog; all are good-about very good overall condition. This is a fine example of a very hard to find, Canadian unit marked Enfield Artillery Carbine, and would make a fantastic addition to any collection.
