Published Spanish Colonial Rolling Block Rifle with Philippine Insurrection US Surcharge
Description: Serial #2039(?), .43 Spanish Reformado (11.5 x 57Rmm), 35" barrel with a very good bore that has mild freckling along its length. This is a very interesting Remington-made rifle with two-line marking on the top tang. The metal has an overall mottled pewter gray and plum-brown patina, with scattered areas of pinprick pitting, mostly on the frame. The frame itself has unknown issue numbers on the left side: "102" and "13"; while the barrel has "502 US" added to the top of the barrel at the breech behind the rear sight. The walnut forend and buttstock are both worn and have numerous small handling marks and minor surface blemishes scattered throughout. There are some small chips missing from the edges of the forend, as well as short, with-the-grain cracks running back from the rear barrel band on the underside of the forend, and running forward from the buttplate on the left side. Added stamps are present on the left side of the buttstock: "100109" and "10002." An additional numerical stamp is present on the right side: "15(3 or 8)0." The action is fully functional, and an iron ramrod is included. This very rifle is pictured on page 226 of "Remington Rolling Block Military Rifles of the World" by George Layman (2010), and the accompanying captions propose that the "502 US" marking was applied by the Manila Arsenal prior to issue to the Philippine Constabulary in 1901. Also included is a sheaf of correspondence between George Layman and the the then owner of the rifle, noted author Michael Carrick, regarding the history of the rifle and meaning of the various applied markings. This is a good example of a very rare Colonial Spanish Rolling Block, with post Spanish American War US markings, and would make a wonderfully unusual addition to any collection of US military firearms.
