Swiss Model 1869 Vetterli Rifle 1st Type
Description: Serial #65834, 10.4mm RF (.41 Swiss), 33” barrel with a very good bore that has light freckling and some pinprick pitting within the grooves. This first type Vetterli is equipped with a pivoting loading gate on the right side of the receiver and is milled for the almost universally absent cartridge lifter assist spring. The metal has an overall plum-brown patina that mixes with a dark pewter gray color on the balance while the loading gate cover retains some of the original bright blue finish. There is also some further mild silvering along the high edges and at the muzzle and the bolt, although correct, is numbered to a different gun on the body (the receiver, barrel, and lifter are matching). The walnut forend and buttstock are in very good shape with numerous small handling marks and blemishes scattered throughout the added military oil finish yet the Swiss stamps are still quite crisp and clear. The rifle is equipped with a non-original ramrod that is slightly too short and the mechanism is tight and fully functional. This is a nice example of an early Swiss Vetterli and would make a nice representative example for a collection.
