**SOLD** U.S. Civil War J.P. Lindsay Model 1863 U.S. Double Rifle Musket in .58 Cap and Ball w/ Bayonet
* RARE Original 1 of less than 1000 Total! *
Description: This VERY unique and cool 2-shot musket was designed and built by the J.P. Lindsay firm in New York. Named the Model 1863 U.S. Double Rifle Musket, it was manufactured for a short period between 1863 and 1864 and built for the U.S. Government for use in the American Civil War. This 2-shot muzzleloader was .58 caliber and used two superposed loads in one barrel, fired one after the other with the single trigger and double hammers. The round rifled barrel was 41 & 1/8" inches long with a semi-octagonal breech with two nipples side by side. The rifle musket had 3 total barrel bands and was just under 56" inches long overall. Despite the U.S. Government had in the arm, as they ordered 1000 of these rifles, the troops that received them were not very pleased. The system was very unfamiliar to them and while they liked the idea of having two shots, it only took a handful of stories being floated around of both charges going off at once and blowing up in the face of the soldier to make the troops afraid of them. While there is no way to know how many were destroyed, common sense would tell us that this further reduces the number of original specimens on the collectors market. This particular example appears to be in very good condition overall with excellent mechanics. Both hammers still have half and their full-cock notches intact, the bore is bright and clean, both nipples are intact and in good shape, and the trigger works as it was designed to although sometimes you have to put a little forward pressure on it to reset for the 2nd shot. As you can see from the pictures, all of the metal parts are bright and handsome, showing only very minor handling marks and wear. The original stock is also very clean and solid, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage. The wood is a very handsome and uniform color from the muzzle to the butt. All of the original stock hardware is intact and in great shape, including the "U.S." marked buttplate and even the steel tulip-headed ramrod. If you look carefully at the flat portion next to the chambers on the left side of the stock you can still make out two U.S. Military inspector's cartouches. One is "ADK" but I cannot make out the other. "ADK" is the right inspector for this weapon. This VERY rare Lindsay Model 1863 Double Rifle Musket is an extraordinary piece that would be an excellent addition to any rare/obscure U.S. Civil War weapons collection. It even comes complete with it's original socket-style spike bayonet which is in excellent condition. It fits the gun perfectly and locks on just as it was intended to with the twist of the sight locking ring. This unique 2-shot musket would not only be a centerpiece addition to any Civil War collection but would also make a VERY COOL decorator. Hanging above the fireplace or in a den I doubt you would have anyone in those areas not notice this real oddity and ask questions, particularly when you add another 18" inches to the end of it with the bayonet! AS AN ANTIQUE, THIS CAN BE SHIPPED DIRECT TO YOUR HOME, NO FFL NEEDED!! SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .58 Manufacturer: J.P.
