US Model 1861 Trenton Musket with New Jersey Property Markings
Description:
NSN, .58 Caliber, 40" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a great looking musket that has matching 1863 dates on the lockplate and barrel breech. The original armory bright finish has dulled to a pewter gray color, and has also developed a thin brown patina throughout. The "U.S. / TRENTON" marking on the lockplate is still crisp and clear, as is the deeply struck "N.J." marking on the left side of the barrel breech. The walnut stock has small handling marks and bruises scattered about the original military oil finish. No federal cartouche is present opposite the lock, but a deep "N.J." state property stamp is present just in front of the rear lock screw, and a large rack number is present just forward of the buttplate tang, "11." The lock operates properly and firmly, and an original, correct ramrod that matches the rest of the metal is included. The Trenton Locomotive and Machine Co. was contracted to produce Model 1861 muskets from 1863 & 1864. In total, they made 11,495 muskets, and this example rates fine-excellent condition overall.
