US Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle by Springfield (Model 1879)
Description: Serial #270439, .45-70, 32 1/2" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has a partial ring of mild pitting a few inches back from the muzzle. This is a handsome trapdoor rifle, the so-called "Model 1879" variant, that has retained some of the original blue on protected areas, but has a smooth, plum-brown patina on the balance. The 1873-dated breech block has a mottled gray-black patina with some original color case-hardening still present on the underside. The walnut stock is in fine condition with some scattered small handling marks and bruises in the reapplied military oil finish, and a clear "SWP/1884" cartouche on the left side of the wrist. Additionally, there is a repaired diagonal crack through the forend just behind the nosecap. The rifle has a correct ramrod, and is fitted with a period leather sling that has some minor crazing and flaking, but is still serviceable. This is a very good-near fine example of a desirable Trapdoor variation. Antique SOLD Antique: Yes |
