Beautiful British India Pattern 1st Type Brown Bess Officer’s Musket by John Prosser of London

NSN, .75 Caliber, 38 7/8" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some minor freckling near the muzzle. This is handsome and well-made musket that has a large amount of original browned finish remaining on the barrel, which blends smoothly with a dull plum-brown patina with scattered areas of mild freckling on the balance. Some traces of pitting can be seen around the vent as well. Deeply struck London proofs are present on the barrel breech, as well as an engraved "LONDON" on the top. The lock has a mostly bright gray patina with some minor mottling and thin surface freckling on the balance, mainly on the swan-necked cock and under the pan. Only the maker’s name is present on the lockplate: "PROSSER." The key-fastened walnut stock has slightly smaller proportions than an Ordnance Brown Bess and has minor handling marks and small blemishes throughout the otherwise excellent oil finish. The brass fittings have a mellow yellow-ochre patina with some minor impact marks on the exterior of the trigger guard bow, and the metal ramrod is fairly bright, with mottled spots of darker freckling along its length. Both original sling swivel bails are also present. John Prosser was a London maker who operated at 9 Charing Cross, London from 1797 until 1813. This is a simply splendid private purchase India Pattern musket, devoid of embellishments, but expertly fitted and finished. It would make a wonderful addition to any collection. Antique;
