New Addition Historic Turkish Peabody-Martini Military Rifle W/British Mkgs
Description: New Addition Historic Turkish Peabody-Martini Military Rifle Offered here for sale and just acquired is this classic historic Peabody-Martini military rifle made by Providence Tool Co, USA. This unusually marked Martini is a Turkish Model 1874 Peabody-Martini which collectors term as a "Type A" Model. It has both British and Turkish markings overall and is original and untouched. In the early 1870s, the Ottoman Empire wanted to modernize its infantry small arms. They were interested in the British service rifle, the Martini?Henry, but for various diplomatic or contractual reasons were unable to procure enough from Britain. The Providence Tool Co. (of Providence, Rhode Island, USA) acquired the contract (or subcontract) to produce what are often called Peabody?Martini rifles for Turkey. Winchester had held earlier rights but sold/transferred the contract to Providence Tool in 1873. The contract called for a large number of rifles – some 600,000 were ordered. Turkey was to receive rifles built to very similar specifications to the British Martini?Henry Mk I, but chambered for a Turkish design cartridge. What makes the Turkish Model 1874 Peabody?Martini distinct is that these rifles mimic the British Martini?Henry Mk I very closely in external form, but differ in a few respects: FeatureTurkish Peabody?Martini (esp. 1874 “Type A”)British Martini?Henry Mk IAction / Falling blockSame basic action: falling block of the Enfield / Martini style, Peabody?Martini version by Providence Tool. Caliber / CartridgeChambered in 11.3×59R (or sometimes cited as 11.3×55R) “.45 Turkish” cartridge — a black powder rimmed cartridge distinct from the British .577?450. Barrel, sights, buttplateSame general layout; checkered buttplate (which the Turks copied from the British Mark I). Rear sights graduated in Turkish numerals. Stocked black walnut etc. Three sling swivels. MarkingsOn the left side of the receiver: “PEABODY & MARTINI PATENTS / MAN’FED by PROVIDENCE TOOL CO. PROV. R.I. U.S.A.” On the right side: Turkish inspection marks. Because Turkey explicitly wanted a rifle that looked like the British Martini?Henry Mk I, they specified that the design should match it closely, including external features: checkered buttplate, sling swivel locations, safety (in early models), etc. Thus many external “British style” attributes appear. But the rifles were manufactured in the USA, with Turkish inspection, and with Ottoman markings added, so they are hybrids: design echoing British, manufacture American, service Turkish. However THIS SPECIMEN CARRIES BRITISH INSPECTOR MARKINGS AS WELL AND ALTHOUGH CHAMBERED FOR .45 TURKISH CATRIDGE IT IS STAMPED “.450”. These rifles were used in the Russo?Turkish War (1877–78) among others. They remained in Turkish / Ottoman arsenals for many decades, including through World War I in certain units (reserve, rear line, etc.). The large contract with the Ottoman Empire was very important for Providence Tool Co. But because Turkey defaulted on payments (delays, non?payment), Providence Tool had serious financial trouble. These financial strains are among the reasons the company eventually ceased production of the Peabody?Martini rifles (by circa 1879) and later went under. This specimen again is ALL ORIGINAL and although overall there are many storage/use marks the rifle retains the large majority blue on barrel and receiver, the markings are sharp on metal and the inspectors cartouches in wood are beautiful. Excellent bore. The rifle also comes with a muzzle cover with British markings. For the British arms collector and especially the Martini collector this is a very fine arm with sports BOTH British ands Turkish markings. An untouched specimen it should be a welcome addition in any collection. Thanks for your bid. Shipping for this item is $42 however final shipping amount is based upon geographical area.
