WW1 Eddystone Model 1917 Enfield Rifle in .30-06 Caliber
** WW2 "3GM-K" Light Rework / Non-Import ** SOLD
Description: When most people are asked what the primary battle rifle was for the American Expedionary Forces in World War 1 they will tell you the Springfield Model 1903 rifle. This is incorrect, there were FAR more Model 1917 Enfields in American service and on the front lines than there were 1903 Springfields. If you have been looking for a nice example of the main battle rifle of the American forces in WW1, this is it. This is a very nice Eddystone Model of 1917 Enfield manufactured for U.S. Military service in WW1 in the early part of 1918. Because of the somewhat mysterious "3GM-K" cartouche on the left side of the stock, we know that it remained in the U.S. Military supply system after WW1 ended, and went thru a light rework during World War 2 but retained most of the original Eddystone factory parts. To this day none of the U.S. armament experts know exactly what this cartouche stands for, only that it is found on U.S. rifles that were reworked during WW2 between 1941 and 1945. This Eddystone Model of 1917 retains all of it's original parts except for the following: the barrel and front sight (12-17 Remington), the firing pin (Winchester), and the triggerguard (Winchester, but the floorplate and lever are Eddystone). Typically only parts that were worn or showed some finish wear or damage were replaced, and this Eddystone must have been in very good condition to have so few parts replaced. The original U.S. Arsenal parkerized finish is very attractive and in good condition overall, showing only light wear in places and a nice consistent color. The front band still retains the original factory blue finish. The bore is superb in this 1917 Enfield, bright and clean with nice sharp rifling from the throat to the muzzle. The muzzle and throat gauges a "1" showing very little to no wear, and there is no pitting, erosion, or imperfections visible. The original Eddystone stock is in very good condition as well, free from any cracks, chips, major damage, or repairs. The American Walnut is a beautiful red/brown color and shows only some very light/minor handling marks typical of an issued but lightly used weapon. Many of the original factory inspection and U.S. Military inspection marks are still visible and clear in addition to the "3GM-K" cartouche described earlier, and an unknown "209" stamped into the right side of the buttstock. All of the controls on this Model 1917 are in perfect working order, and the action is both smooth and precise, turning into battery perfectly with no slop. The mechanics of this rifle are like-new and the internal parts show no visible wear. We have no doubt that this rifle would shoot just as accurately and reliably today as it did when it left the factory 101 plus years ago! This Eddystone comes complete with a Korean War vintage U.S.G.I.sling. This Eddystone Model of 1917 with history in both WW1 and WW2 would be an excellent addition to any U.S. Military collection, and would be a fine shooter as well as an investment.
