RARE, MINTY Steyr VK98 BNZ45 German WW2 VK 98 Volksgewehr
Description: This is an extremely rare and seldom seen Steyr VK98 rifle, it is matching numbered and was made in early 1945. The rifle is 100% correct and factory original. The VK98 was designed for rapid mass production to arm the German Army and also the German Volkssturm. The design was a vastly simplified 98k rifle that was reduced to simply the elements needed to fire a rifle cartridge with some level of accuracy. Manufacture of these rifles began in January 1945 and perhaps as many as 10,000 were produced but no one is certain. Manufactured at the very tail end of the WWII, the VK-98 or VG-5 was part of the "Volkswaffen" (People's Weapon) series of armaments, intended to gear up German 2nd line defensive formations without diverting higher quality armaments still needed by the main formations of the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS. Most of the units destined to receive these weapons were "Volksturm" (People's Storm or People's Assault), which consisted mostly of men too old and boys too young to be properly drafted. When the war came to an end, few VG98's were picked up by Allied trophy hunters since they weren't as "pretty" as the more common 98k or mechanically novel like some other Volks weapons, resulting in very few being available on the contemporary American market. Most were destroyed by the Russians. The heart of the VK 98 is a Model 98 receiver, with crude fixed sights, a roughly finished, BNZ marked re-purposed machine gun barrel. and a one-piece stock. This particular example is marked 'BNZ 45', denoting it was made in 1945 at the Steyr factory. The finish shows minimal wear, and is a mix of phosphated and blued parts. The barrel and bolt handle are matching, and they are also the only numbered parts. Excellent, unmarked stock that is smooth to the touch. Bore looks practically unused. Original sling swivel is present. This is an extremely scarce last-ditch rifle from WW2. All items are also available for sale in our brick & mortar store and are subject to prior sale. Think long, think wrong. Payment On firearms, we typically only accept credit cards or money orders/cashier's checks.
