Arisaka, Type 99 Modified in 7.7 Caliber
Description: This Arisaka, still bnearing some minor dings imposed on it by the United States Marines, but cleaned up, corrosion largley gone, rust blued and refinished---but not so as to lose it's character, can be yours! Life is too short to own an ugly gun and this is certainly a beautiful one. It has all the accoutrements that were standard in the early war 99's, the sling (new) the antiair sight, the monopod the dust cover, cleanung rod, etc. It has an intact MUM! I tested it at 50 yards (all I could get at the time). It grouped nicely at 1 inch below dead center of the bull. This means that a minor adjustmen will make it a 300 yard rifle without using the ladder. Authenticity is always a problem becouse everyone wants the parts to match---well they don't---no chance. The barrel and action definitely match but the the bolt had to be found elsewhere. I worked it to make it as smooth as an Arisaka can get. The stock and some of the parts came as a group ( Bands, butt plate, trigger assembbly and most of the other stuff) I had to dig for the little screws, etc. Which brings me to the antiaircraft sights. I have the wings and they go with the rifle--but I do not have the two little screws. I have been unable to find any and while I'm on everybody's watch list there has been nothing yet. OK, now ammunition was rumored to be a problem but it isn't. Steinel carries it as do several main line manufacturers. I personally have all the reloading equipment to run out a hundred rounds a day and the reloading data. The 7.7 has almost exactly the same ballistic characteristics as the British .303 which just happens to also be very, very close to the .308. That means the 7.7 can take down any gane in North America except perhaps a head-on Grizzly bear.. The Arisaka action was tested for pressure against all the bolt action rifles ued in WWII, (Mauser, Springfied, Enfield, etc.) And was found to be by far, the strougest. This means that your loads might be adjusted very carefully to take the Grizzly head-on after all. The Japanese also came up with chrome lined barrels--it took us until Vietnam. That's one reason why an 80 year old rifle can be incredibly accurate. This piece will take down a White Tail Buck or hang on a wall and do a great job at either. Anyway, I wish you luck with it and I hope you find it before somebody else does. It's really the best one out there.
