WW2 Vet G.I. Bring-back Kokura Arsenal Type 99 Arisaka Rifle in 7.7 Japanese
**Combat-used w/ Bayonet and Original Capture Tag** SOLD
Description:
VERY Unique WW2 Vet bring-back Kokura Arsenal Type 99 Arisaka 7.7 Japanese. Partially-defaced Chrysanthemum with original monopod and anti-aircraft sights. Includes original bayonet and G2 (Military Intelligence) Inspection tag still present from WW2. This Type 99 is especially unique and cool in that upon taking it apart to clean, we found that the both the stock and handguard are literally charred black from the rifle being fired furiously for an extended period of time. We have never seen a WW2 bolt-action military rifle with this kind of combat damage (see last two pictures). The exterior of the stock looks normal and the chrome-lined bore is excellent so we had no idea that it would look like that when we started the cleaning it. It's very easy to imagine that this rifle was in the hands of a Japanese soldier defending the beach at Iwo Jima or Tarawa who was in the heaviest of fighting. The rate of fire required to toast the inside of the stock like that would have to be extremely high for a very long time. The Mum on this Type 99 rifle is only partially defaced in the manner of an individual soldier using his bayonet and a rock to mark some lines thru it before a suicidal "banzai" charge, it is not ground-off like the surrendered weapons acquired after the Japanese surrendered. The rifle is all matching except for the bolt, which again, is typical of a battlefield/KIA pick-up where the G.I.'s took the bolts out of the rifles and tossed them in one pile, and the rifles in another. When it came time to pick up a trophy rifle the G.I. would just go grab a rifle out of one pile and a bolt out of another and put them together and off he went. Another unique feature of this rifle is it still has the U.S. Military intelligence capture tag on it. Some parts of the tag are hard to read as some of it has faded, but most of it is legible. The tag is printed "G2" (Military Intelligence designation) at the top, and is signed and stamped as inspected on the bottom half. The officer/inspector also wrote on the tag "One Bayonet Japanese" in the same small cursive and ink that he signed the tag with, accounting for the bayonet and scabbard that were captured with the rifle. As you can see from the pictures, this Arisaka is very attractive with lots of original gloss blue finish remaining on all of the metal. The stock is attractive and in great shape other than the charred interior of the barrel area, and the bore is excellent. All of the controls are in perfect working order and the action locks up tight with no slop. It should shoot just as well today as it did when it was issued. The bayonet and scabbard are in good shape overall but do show some more age and wear than the rifle. The bayonet is an early production model before the Japanese eliminated the hooked quillion. This G.I.-captured Type 99 Arisaka and bayonet are really interesting and extremely cool. There is literally no doubt that this Type 99 was in very heavy combat, and to also still have the capture tag and bayonet with it makes this truly a one-of-a-kind piece!
