This Underwood M1 Carbine is a compelling wartime U.S. military rifle with desirable postwar foreign-service provenance. Manufactured by Underwood Elliott Fisher Co. in 1943, this example features an Underwood receiver paired with an Underwood 10-43 dated barrel, complete with visible U.S. Ordnance flaming bomb proof. The M1 Carbine remains one of the most recognizable and widely collected American military firearms of the Second World War, valued for its light weight, fast handling, and historic battlefield role.

Mechanically, the M1 Carbine was a major advancement in compact infantry firepower. Its short-stroke gas piston system delivered reliable semi-automatic performance while keeping the rifle light, quick, and easy to carry. The platform served across multiple theaters during World War II and remained in extensive use after the war with allied and foreign military forces around the world.

The standout feature on this example is the boxed FAT 82 cartouche stamped into the right side of the buttstock. FAT markings are associated with Fabbrica d'Armi di Terni, the Italian arsenal at Terni, and indicate postwar Italian military inspection, rebuild, or service association. The rifle also displays additional postwar service indicators, including the rack-numbered buttstock plate and arsenal-updated components.

Additional collector appeal comes from the wartime Underwood 10-43 barrel, the Underwood receiver, the visible U.S. Ordnance proof, and the rifle's honest surplus condition. This is not a sterile commercialized example; it shows the wear, handling marks, and service character expected from a military carbine that continued its working life after World War II.

Some rifles are valuable because they are pristine. Others are valuable because they tell a story. This Underwood M1 Carbine offers both wartime American manufacture and postwar foreign-service intrigue, making it a strong candidate for any serious U.S. martial arms or M1 Carbine collection.
