World War II U.S. NATIONAL POSTAL METER M1 Carbine C&R Light Rifle w/SLING
Early SCARCE WWII Carbine w/Undated MARLIN Barrel
Description: World War II U.S. NATIONAL POSTAL METER M1 Carbine C&R Light Rifle w/SLING Early SCARCE WWII Carbine w/Undated MARLIN Barrel Here we present a C&R National Postal Meter U.S. M1 Carbine Semi-Automatic Rifle, manufactured November 1943 to June 1944 in Rochester, New York. This .30 caliber semi-automatic rifle was first used by the United States Armed Forces on October 22, 1941. National Postal Meter M1 carbines are one of the scarcer contractor carbines made. This example is equipped with a Marlin barrel. Prior to World War II, U.S. Army Ordnance received many reports that the full-size M1 Garand was too heavy and cumbersome for most support troops, such as mortarmen and radiomen to carry. During prewar and early war field exercises, it was found that the M1 Garand impeded these soldiers' mobility, as a slung rifle would frequently catch on brush, bang the helmet and tilt it over the eyes. Many soldiers found the rifle slid off the shoulder unless slung diagonally across the back, where it prevented the wearing of standard field packs and haversacks. Additionally, Germany's use of glider-borne and paratroop forces to launch surprise ‘blitzkrieg’ attacks behind the front lines generated a request for a new compact infantry weapon to equip support troops. This gun was manufactured as part of National Postal Meter’s third and final production block between November 1943 to June 1944 in the 4075010-4432099 serial number range with an undated Marlin barrel. “UI” marked type I barrel band. “UN” sling swivel. “N” front sight. “S” L-flip rear sight. “N” flat top blued bolt. “SN” push button safety. “SN” magazine catch. “N/9” trigger housing. “LTQ” hammer. “SW-SG” sear. “SN” operating rod.
