Here we present a C&R Springfield U.S. M1 Garand Rifle, manufactured in 1943 at the Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts. During the 20th century, competitive rifle marksmanship had something of a heyday. Following the first matches of Olympic competitive shooting in 1896 came the inaugural National Match in Camp Perry, Ohio, in 1907. Rimfire rifles made their Olympic debut shortly after in 1908, and in 1919 organized rimfire competition started in earnest at Camp Perry. This helped stimulate a nationwide system of high school, collegiate, and professional smallbore rifle shooting competitions. For a time, organized rifle practice was almost as normal as football practice in high schools across America, a martial tradition that we’ve sadly lost in recent years. 

Perhaps the most refined version of the M1 is that known as the National Match (NM) rifle. In March of 1963, the Springfield Armory was directed by the Ordnance Department to furnish 800 M1 rifles for use at the High Power National Marches at Camp Perry, Ohio. These rifles were to be capable of a higher degree of accuracy than standard service grade rifles. The first National Match Garands consisted of only a “NM” marked barrel. The remainder of the rifle consisted of hand selected components. The rifles were assembled, and the trigger pull adjusted by Springfield Armory’s most skilled armorers. National Match conditioned M1 rifles were produced at the Springfield Armory through 1963. Most rifles were sold to qualified civilians through the Director of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM) program, now named the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). The first National Match rifles were sold to civilians in late 1955, and the last in 1973.

The overall condition is fine. National Match oprod, front and rear sights. Rubber butt pad instead of the steel butt plate. The bore measures a tight .300 and is bright with sharp rifling. The barrel and stock are unmarked. The action is excellent; very smooth.
