TYPICALLY THESE GUNS WERE ISSUED TO BOYS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 6 AND 12 TO BE USED AS DRILL AND TRAINING RIFLES FOR THE ITALIAN FASCIST YOUTH NAMED OPERA NAZIONALE BALILLA (ONB). "BALILLA" WAS A NICKNAME GIVEN TO THE RIFLES AS IT WAS THE NICKNAME GIVEN TO A YOUNG BOY IN THE 18TH CENTURY WHO KICKED OFF A REVOLT AGAINST THE AUSTRIAN OCCUPIERS OF THE TIME. "TENENTE/CASTEL NUOVO DELLE LANZE CARLO/1 MEDAGILA D'ORO" IS INSCRIBED ON A PLAQUE ON THE SIDE. HE WAS WAS A ITALIAN LIEUTENANT WORLD WAR ONE NATIONAL HERO. HE WAS MORTALLY INJURED AT AGE 21 WHILE HOLDING OFF THE ENEMY WITH HIS MACHINE GUN NEST. PASSING AWAY IN A AUSTRIAN POW HOSPITAL SHORTLY AFTER. HE HAD BEEN POSTHUMOUSLY AWARDED A GOLD MEDAL AND THE SILVER MEDAL. BOTH WERE THE HIGHEST MEDALS AVAILBLE TO AN ITALIAN SOLDIER FOR HEROISM. ADDITIONALLY THERE IS A STREET IN TURIN ITALY NAMED AFTER HIM. WE ARE INCLUDING WITH THE GUN TWO ONLINE ARTICLES ABOUT HIS LIFE AND HIS HEROIC MILITARY ACTIONS THAT EARNED FROM WHERE HE EARNED HIS MEDALS. THE RIFLE SHOWS WEAR, AS IS THE CASE FOR MOST DRILL RIFLES BUT IS COMPLETE AND FULLY FUNCTIONAL. THE STOCK HAS A FEW DINGS SCATTERED AROUND WITH OVER 70% OF THE FINISH REMAINING WITH NO CRACKS OR CHIPS. THE BOLT STILL RETAINING OVER 80% OF THE CASE HARDENING. BLUEING ON THE BARREL IS OUTSTANDING STILL FOR THE AGE. THE BAYONET IS A LITTLE LOOSE BUT WILL STILL HOLD IN PLACE. THE BORE HAS CRISP RIFLINGWITH A LITTLE BIT OF SCATTERED FROST THOUGHOUT.
