British Commercial Martini-Enfield Rifle with UVF Markings
Description: Serial #2885 U, .303 British, 30 1/4" barrel with a very good, lightly freckled bore. This is a Birmingham proofed rifle that does not have any maker markings on the receiver, and retains approximately 50-60% of the armory applied blue, that has mixed with a smooth plum-brown patina, as well as mild silvering along the high edges and projections. Some areas of mild pitting are also present along the sides of the barrel where the no longer present handguard used to be. The walnut buttstock and forend are in very good-fine shape with numerous minor scattered handling marks and small surface blemishes under the fairly thick armory re-applied oil finish, as well as some minor damage around the forend pin. The stock is nearly devoid of markings save for a still crisp Ulster Volunteer Force stamp at the heel on the right side: “U.V.F. / (the Red Hand of Ulster) / FOR GOD AND ULSTER". The ramrod is no longer present. The mechanism is fully functional and the rifle rates good-very good condition. The UVF was a Unionist militia founded in 1912 in order to form an armed force opposed to Irish home rule. They were armed with a hodge-podge of privately owned weapons (like this commercially-made Martini-Enfied) until the famous Larne gunrunning incident of 1914, when 20,000 Mauser rifles and 3,000,000 rounds of ammunition where smuggled into Ulster by the UVF. World War 1 severely limited the UVF’s manpower since most of the men and officers joined the British Army during the hostilities, and the force was disbanded in 1919. An identically named group was formed in the 1960s as a response to IRA activities, but had no other connection to the previous organization. This is a great piece of Irish history, from an era of strife and vicious conflict.
