c1928 FINNISH M28 Mosin-Nagant BOLT ACTION Rifle C&R SIG BARREL Winter War
“SY” Civil Guard, WWII, Continuation War
Description: c1928 FINNISH M28 Mosin-Nagant BOLT ACTION Rifle C&R SIG BARREL Winter War “SY” Civil Guard, WWII, Continuation War Here we present a C&R Finnish Sig Mosin-Nagant M28 Rifle, made circa 1928-32 in Riihimäki, Finland. Originally, Finland had a large number of Soviet Mosin-Nagant Model 1891 rifles, which were in military arms depots when they achieved their independence from Russia in December 1917. Within a few years, however, the Finns would begin producing Mosin-Nagant rifles at SAKO, Tikka and Valmet, three arms producers that remain famous today for high-quality rifles. The Finnish Model 28 is a variant of the original Russian Mosin-Nagant Model 1891. In 1919, two years after Finland declared independence from the Russian Empire, the Suojeluskuntain Yliesikunnan Asepaja (Civil Guard Supreme Staff Gun Works) opened in a former Helsinki brewery to repair private arms and recondition Russian military rifles for Finnish service. The rifle repair shop became financially independent of the civil guard in 1921. The Suojeluskuntain Yliesikunnan Asepaja moved from Helsinki to an ammunition factory in Riihimäki on June 1, 1927, and reorganized as SAKO. The first large-scale upgrade of Finnish Mosin-Nagant rifles was the M/24 rifle for the Finnish Civil Guard. The Finnish Civil Guard (the Suojeluskunta) fulfilled a function similar to the U.S. National Guard. Next, the Finns reworked the M1891 Mosin-Nagant by retaining the receiver and magazine, but using a shorter, heavier barrel, improved sights, an improved bolt and new barrel bands, among other changes. After problems arose with the stock breaking when using the bayonet, the stocks were also modified. A shortened cavalry version, the M/27rv, was also produced in limited numbers. Very similar to the M/27 was the M/28, as is this example, which had a different barrel band and improved trigger. Initially, M/28 barrels were purchased from SIG, but later they were produced by Tikka and SAKO. The Soviet Model 1891 known in the West as the Mosin–Nagant and in Russia as Mosin's rifle is a five-shot, bolt action, internal magazine fed military rifle developed from 1882 to 1891 and used by the armed forces of the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union and various other nations. It is one of the most mass-produced military bolt-action rifles in history with over 37 million units having been made since its inception in 1891, and, in spite of its age, it has been used in various conflicts around the world up to the present day. The overall condition is good. The action is excellent. The bore is dark with serviceable rifling; short counterbore at the muzzle. The stock shows use and remains solid. The top handguard is an old replacement made to fit under the foremost barrel band and it has a short split just ahead of the rear sight. Numbers match on the receiver and bolt.
