Canadian Ross M-10 Mk.3 Rifle (Cameron Highlanders Marked)
Description: NSN, .303 British, 30 1/2" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some mild freckling within the grooves. This rifle retains about 50-60% of the original blue with silvering and mottled gray fading along the balance. The bolt has a mostly pewter gray patina, but does have a noticeable amount of original blue remaining on the rear of the body near the handle. The rifle is outfitted with the elaborate Ross battle aperture rear sight, and the front sight hood is still in place. The full-length walnut military stock has been nicely refinished over numerous small handling marks and minor blemishes, and has some with-the-grain cracks along the length of the handguard. CEF 43rd Battalion markings and 1915 date are present on the right side of the buttstock, with a faint, but partially legible “QUEBEC" cartouche as well. The 43rd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders of Canada, was mobilized in Winnipeg, Manitoba in late 1914, and embarked for Britain in June of the following year. They arrived in France on February 22, 1916, and fought as part of the 9th Infantry Brigade, 3rd Canadian Division (CEF) until the end of the war. The unit was heavily engaged and awarded Battle Honours for: Mount Sorrel, Somme (1916), Flers-Courcelette, Ancre Heights, Arras (1917 & 1918), Vimy (1917), Hill 70, Ypres (1917), Passchendaele, Amiens, Scarpe (1918), Drocourt-Quéant, Hindenburg Line, Canal du Nord, Pursuit to Mons, and France and Flanders (1916-1918). This is a very nice example of a CEF-issued Ross, used by a storied Canadian unit, and is in very good condition overall.
