French ST. ETIENNE/Turkish T.C. ORMAN Model 1907/15 BERTHIER Carbine C&R
8mm LEBEL Turkish Orman FORESTRY SERVICE Carbine
Description: French ST. ETIENNE/Turkish T.C. ORMAN Model 1907/15 BERTHIER Carbine C&R 8mm LEBEL Turkish Orman FORESTRY SERVICE Carbine Here we present a rare C&R French St. Etienne/Turkish T.C. Orman Model 1907/15 Berthier Bolt Action Carbine made circa the World War I era by the French State Military Arsenal in St. Etienne, France and updated by T.C. Orman in 1948. During the early stages of the war, it was quickly recognized that the Model 1907 Berthier's three-shot magazine was simply too small in comparison to foreign weapons, requiring too-frequent reloading. Additionally, it was found that trench mud and grit could enter the weapon through the opening in the bottom of the magazine. To correct these issues, the Model 1916 Berthier rifle was introduced with a five-round en-bloc clip. The clip discharge opening at the bottom of the protruding magazine was replaced by a spring loaded trapdoor to keep out dirt and debris. This improved 5-shot design was then fitted to existing rifles and carbine-length Berthier models. During WWII, the Turkish government wound up in possession of several thousand (between 5k and 10k) French Berthier rifles, mostly 1907/15 models, but also some Mle 1916s. After the war, Turkey found itself having problems with illegal logging of its rather valuable Circassian walnut forests and decided that it was necessary to arm its forest ranger service. This rifle started out life as a Model 1907/15 infantry rifle and was converted to a Forestry Carbine in 1848 in Turkey, likely at the Ankara Arsenal. Again, details are a bit sketchy, but it appears that a decision was made to deliberately use a non-standard caliber of ammunition for these rangers, so that if their rifles were stolen they would be of limited value (like the British Enfields converted to riot police shotguns in India and Egypt). The overall condition is good. The action is strong. The bolt has been renumbered to the receiver. The bore is in good shape with strong rifling. The stock is well-used and remains solid. The screw at the back of the trigger guard is absent. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 22 inches. Caliber: 8mm Lebel Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
