Very rare officer's model LEC I*...this Enfield was manufactured in 1899 by seminal producer BSA for retail to the Victorian officer elite who were, at the time, expected to furnish their own small arms. Approved by the MoD in 1896, the LEC was the scaled-down variant of the historic Long Lee-Enfield rifle. Identified as a Mk.1* by the lack of a cleaning rod provision in the forestock, the gun may be further dated by its low, three-digit serial number. Features include a magazine cut-off, 21" round barrel, bolt-mounted safety, dust cover, and full-length, Mannlicher-style stock fitted with a muzzle cap that would later be modified for use in the iconic Short Magazine Lee-Enfield. The markings include all matching serial numbers(bolt, rear sight, barrel and receiver), as well as BNP/pressure test marks; neither import nor export mark are present. The Walnut furniture is in good condition with an unfaded BSA cartouche on the pistol grip. There are scrapes, pressure dents, handling marks, a couple of superficial hairline cracks and two 1/8" patches of wood filler on either side of the stock beneath the rear sight(pictured). Having no damage, cracks or repairs of note, the furniture is original to the gun and the buttstock could benefit from a light tightening. Mechanically excellent, the rifle headspaces correctly and the action is both brisk and smooth. The bore is remarkably fine displaying sharply-edged rifling beneath light lint, there is no visible pitting, frost or rust.
