Rare Swiss Model 1817 Flintlock Musket with Geneva Canton Marking

Description:
NSN, .69 Caliber, 41" barrel with a fair, lightly freckled and pitted bore. This is a Charleville type musket as adopted by the Swiss in the early 19th century. The metal has an overall mottled gray patina throughout, with specks of plum-brown freckling scattered more or less evenly throughout. The lockplate is unmarked save for a small "(fleur-de-lis) / S" proof just ahead of the cock. An issue number "23" is present on the barrel tang and frizzen bolster, as well as on many of the screw heads. A small "D (in sunburst)" and Geneva cantonal coat of arms are present on the breech end of the barrel. The pale wooden stock has numerous small handling marks and blemishes scattered throughout the original oil finish, with some larger surface scratches on the buttstock. The buttplate has a pitted, plum-brown patina, while the remaining furniture matches the barrel and lock. The nosecap fits fairly loosely and sits with a slight upwards cant, and a correct iron ramrod is included. These are handsome and well-made muskets, seldom encountered in the US in their original flintlock configuration, and this example is in very good-near fine condition. Antique;
