Rare Vetterli 1874 6.5mm caliber
Description: SOLD The Vetterli was a very early bolt action rifle designed by Johann-Friedreich Vetterli, a Swiss arms inventor. Italy adopted the rifle as a Model 1870. In this form, it was a 10.35x47mm black powder single shot rifle. In 1887, the rifles were modified by adding a 4-round box magazine designed by Italian Artillery Captain, G. Vitali. This made it a Model 1870/87. In 1915, it was modified again. Due to the arms shortages in Italy, the rifle was converted to fire the current 6.5x52mm Carcano round. The barrel was relined and rechambered. A new 5-round Mannlicher box magazine that was loaded with Carcano 6-round clips was added, making the model designation 1870/87/15. Caution: if you fire this rifle use reduced charge loads. The subject rifle was made by Brescia in 1874. Others were produced at Torino, or Terni more common arsenals under license from the Swiss. The Italians supplied a large number of these to Russia during WWI. as well. The bore is good with good rifling, clean, and as typical for guns this age, the grooves have some corrrosion from wartime corrosive primers..The overall condition is very good with most arseanl blue, clean markings on the metal and wood.Stock numbers rarely match the reciever numbers on wartime guns! Check my inventory of rare grips, unusual gun parts, barrels and holsters. Shipping may be higher than stated as shippers raise their prices twice year without notice!
