Remington #5 Model 1902 Rolling Block Military Rifle in 7x57mm Mauser w/ Original Sling
Description: This is a very nice and original Remington Model 1902 Rolling Block military rifle chambered in 7x57mm Mauser, complete with the original leather military issue sling. This single-shot #5 size Rolling Block was an improved version of the Model 1896 Rolling Block, the first small bore smokeless powder military rifle from Remington. The only changes from the Model 1896 were the use of Day's patent rotary extractor, which would kick out empties a few feet behind the operator, a redesign of the breechblock shape to that of the New York State militia contract rifles from 30 years prior, and the incorporation of an upper tang built into the buttplate. The Edwards rear sight was also exchanged for a simplified version in later production Model 1902's, however this example was made while they were still using the Edwards rear sight. There was also a couple of changes made to the style of wooden handguard during production, but this example has the earliest type just like it has the earliest rear sight. A number of these rifles were purchased by South American and Central American countries for their militaries, but the most well-known and largest order came from El Salvador. The El Salvador military contract rifles were ordered with the crest f the country roll stamped on the receiver. This example does not have any roll stamped crest on the receiver, nor did it ever have one that was ground off. This particular example is in good working order, with everything on the rifle 100% functional. The action is still tight, and locks up perfectly, and the hammer still has both the safety notch and full cock notches intact and solid. The original factory blue and case colored finishes are gone, instead it wears what appears to be a very old arsenal-refinished blue. The finish is uniform and appears to have been on the rifle for at least 70 to 100 years, as the rifle was most likely built between 1902 and 1910 before being issued to one of the aforementioned militaries. The bore in this Remington is good, showing strong rifling with only some very minor pitting in the grooves. The stock set appears to have been reworked when the gun was arsenal overhauled, and is in good condition. The wood shows some small spots of filler, some markings possibly scratched into from a prior owner or soldier that was issued the rifle, and an "022" stamped into the left side of the wrist by the military that owned it. There are no cracks or major repairs to the stock or handguard. The stock hardware is all intact, tight, and original to the gun. The cleaning rod is still in the rifle, and the original military issue sling is also still on it. If you have been looking for one of these as both an investment and shooter, this example would be the perfect choice, and is priced to sell.
